Hunyady, János Corvinus or John c.1387-1456
Hungarian warrior and statesman

Born apparently in Wallachia (modern Romania), the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund granted him Hunyad in Transylvania in 1409. He spent most of his life crusading against the Turks, whom he expelled from Transylvania (1442). Despite defeats at Varna (1444) and Kossovo (1448), in 1456 he routed the Turkish armies besieging Belgrade, thus securing a 70-year peace and becoming a national hero. During the reign of Ladislaus V (1446-53), he acted as Governor of the Kingdom. He left two sons, Ladislaus, who was beheaded on a charge of conspiracy, and Matthias Corvinus, who became King of Hungary as Matthias I.
