Innocent IV, original name Sinibaldo Fieschi d.1254
Italian pope

Born in Genoa and trained in canon law at Bologna, he took a view of papal supremacy very similar to that of Innocent III. He was unscrupulous in using patronage to construct his own power network, and his pontificate (from 1243) brought the struggle between the papacy and Emperor Frederick II to its climax. At Frederick's death (1250), Innocent sought to establish papal overlordship in Sicily. This was acknowledge by Frederick's illegitimate son Manfred who nevertheless led a revolt in 1254. Innocent also put the Inquisition on a permanent basis in Italy.
