Isaac I, Comnenus c.1005-61
Eastern Roman emperor

He ruled in Constantinople (Istanbul) from 1057 to 1059. He established the finances of the empire on a sounder footing, confiscated Church property to pay for strengthening his military defences, and repelled the Hungarians attacking his northern frontier. He then resigned the Crown, and retired to a monastery, where he died. He wrote commentaries on Homer.
