Joachim, Joseph 1831-1907
Hungarian violinist and composer

Born in Kittsee, near Pressburg, he first appeared in public at the age of seven. In 1844, under the patronage of Felix Mendelssohn, he performed in London, making a great impact. Director of the Berlin Conservatory from 1869, he founded the Joachim Quartet which was renowned for its performances of J S Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. He also composed three violin concertos and overtures to Hamlet and Henry IV.
