Spanish soldier

The illegitimate son of Emperor Charles V, he defeated the Moors in Granada (1570) and the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto (1571). In 1573 he took Tunis, and was then sent to Milan and, in 1576, to the Spanish Netherlands as viceroy. He planned to marry Mary, Queen of Scots, but died of typhoid at Namur.
