Jolson, Al, originally Asa Yoelson 1886-1950
US actor and singer

Born in Srednike, Lithuania, the son of a rabbi, he emigrated to the USA in 1893 and lived in Washington DC and New York City. He made his stage debut in The Children of the Ghetto (1899) and toured with circus and minstrel shows. His sentimental songs such as 'Mammy' (1909) and 'Sonny Boy' moved vaudeville audiences in the 1920s but he is best known as the star of the first talking picture The Jazz Singer (1927). His recorded voice featured in the commemorative films The Jolson Story (1946) and Jolson Sings Again (1949).
