Judas Iscariot 1st century AD
One of the 12 Apostles
Born probably in Kerioth, in the tribe of Judah, he usually appears last in the lists in the synoptic Gospels (Mark 3.19). He is identified as the one who betrayed Jesus Christ for 30 pieces of silver by helping to arrange for his arrest at Gethsemane by the Jewish authorities (Mark 14.43-46). Other traditions indicate his role as treasurer (John 13.29) and his later repentance and suicide (Matthew 27.3-5). The meaning of Iscariot is uncertain: it may mean 'man of Keriot', 'assassin' or 'man of falsehood'. He was replaced by Matthias (Acts 1.26).
