Junot, (Jean-)Andoche, Duc d'Abrantès, nicknamed La Tempête ('The Tempest') 1771-1813
French soldier

Born in Bussy-le-Grand, he was adjutant under Napoleon I in Egypt. In 1806 he was made Military Governor of Paris, and in 1807 was appointed to the command of the army for Portugal. He was created Duc d'Abrantès and appointed Governor of Portugal but, defeated by the Duke of Wellington at Vimeiro (1808), was obliged to sign the Convention of Cintra and leave Portugal. He served in Germany and Russia, and after defeat at Smolensk (1812) was sent to govern Illyria. Mentally ill, he threw himself from a window of his father's house near Dijon. His wife Laure Permon, Duchesse d'Abrantès (1785-1838), wrote her Mémoires (1831-35), depicting the society of the time.
