Kemble, Charles 1775-1854
English actor

Born in Brecon, Wales, he made his first appearance at Sheffield in 1792. In 1794 he played Malcolm to his brother's Macbeth at Drury Lane, London. He retired from the stage in 1840, when he was appointed examiner of plays. Although he was not at first a good actor, he became more admired later in his career, and he distinguished himself in comedy and romantic roles. He was the brother of Sarah Siddons, John Philip Kemble and Stephen Kemble, and the father of both Fanny Kemble and the historian and philologist John Mitchell Kemble (1807-57).
