Kornilov, Lavr Georgiyevich 1870-1918
Russian general

Born in western Siberia, he was a Cossack. With previous intelligence and diplomatic experience, he was a divisional commander in World War I, tried to turn the tide against the Germans by an offensive in June 1917 and in August 1917 marched on Petrograd (now St Petersburg), in an attempt to set up a military directorate. He was forced to surrender by Aleksandr Kerensky, but subsequently escaped. Kornilov then organized a Cossack force against the Bolsheviks, but fell in battle.
