Lardner, Ring(gold Wilmer) 1885-1933
US short-story writer and journalist
Born in Michigan, he was a successful sports writer and newspaper columnist in Chicago, St Louis and New York, and drew on his sporting background in his first collection of stories You Know Me Al: A Busher's Letters (1916). His cynical humour marks him out as a distinctive voice, and his story collections include Gullible's Travels (1917), Treat 'Em Rough (1918), The Love Nest (1926) and First and Last (1934). He also wrote one novel, The Big Town (1921), satirical verse, a satirical pseudo-autobiography, The Story of a Wonder Man (1927), and a musical comedy, June Moon (1929).
