Lepidus, Marcus Aemilius d.13BC
Roman politician

He declared for Julius Caesar against Pompey during the civil war (49-31BC), and became Caesar's deputy at Rome (46). He supported Mark Antony, and became one of the triumvirate with him and Octavian (Emperor Augustus), with Africa for his province (40-39). Outmanoeuvred by Octavian in the power struggle of the 30s BC, he retired from active politics, but remained head of state religion (Pontifex Maximus) until his death.
