Livy, properly Titus Livius 59BC-AD17
Roman historian

Born in Patavium (Padua), he settled in Rome in about 29BC and was admitted to the court of Augustus, but took no part in politics. His history of Rome from her foundation to the death of Nero Claudius Drusus (9BC) comprised 142 books, of which 35 have survived and of these three are imperfect. Livy can be placed in the forefront of Latin writers, and his work was a major influence on subsequent historical writing.
