Locke, Matthew c.1621-1677
English composer

Born in Exeter, he collaborated with James Shirley on the masque Cupid and Death (1653), winning a reputation as a theatre composer. After writing the music for Charles II's coronation procession, he was made Composer-in-Ordinary to the King. He was a champion of the 'modern' French style of composition, and his works include much incidental music for plays (though that for Macbeth, long attributed to him, is of doubtful authenticity), Latin church music, songs and chamber works.
