Louis VI, known as Louis the Fat 1081-1137
King of France

He succeeded his father Philip I in 1108. For most of his reign he campaigned incessantly against the turbulent and unruly nobility of the Île-de-France and eventually re-established his royal authority. Despite an inclination to gluttony and a corpulence which left him unable to mount a horse after the age of 46, he was one of the most active of the House of Capet, and greatly increased the power and prestige of the monarchy.
