Louis XVII 1785-95
Titular King of France

Born Louis Charles at Versailles, the second son of Louis XVI, he became Dauphin on the death of his brother (1789). He became king (but only in name) in prison on the execution of his father (1793). He died, probably of tuberculosis, but rumour suggested by poison. Many persons subsequently claimed to be the Dauphin.
