French statesman

Born in Paris, he was an energetic War Minister under Louis XIV from the War of Devolution (1668). His work reforming and strengthening the army bore fruit in the Dutch War, which ended with the Peace of Nijmegen (1678). He took a leading part in the capture of Strasbourg (1681) and in the persecution of Protestants. Recognized as a brilliant administrator, he was the king's most influential minister in the years 1683-91.
