Lully, Jean Baptiste, originally Giovanni Battista Lulli 1632-87
French composer
Born in Florence of Italian parents, he went as a boy to Paris, and was finally, after much ambitious intriguing, made operatic director by Louis XIV (1672). With Philippe Quinault as librettist, he composed many operas, in which he made the ballet an essential part. Most popular were Thésée (1675), Armide et Rénaud (1686), Phaéton (1683) and Acis et Galatée (1686). He also wrote church music, dance music and pastorals.
