Lupescu Magda 1902-77
Mistress and second wife of King Charles II of Romania

Her Jewish descent as much as her dissolute behaviour earned her the disapproval of Romanian society, itself notorious for its profligacy. Because of the scandal surrounding their affair, Charles renounced his claim to the throne and when he returned to Romania in 1930 it was on condition that she remained abroad. When she also returned and took up residence in the palace, the Prime Minister, Iuliu Maniu, resigned. Upon her marriage in 1947 to Charles, she took the name Princess Elena and lived in exile with the former king.
