Maclehose, Agnes, née Craig 1759-1841
Scottish literary figure
She was born in Edinburgh, the daughter of a surgeon. In 1776 she married a Glasgow lawyer, from whom she separated in 1780. She met Robert Burns at a party in Edinburgh in 1787, and subsequently, under the name 'Clarinda', carried on a remarkable correspondence with him. A number of Burns's poems and songs were dedicated to her.
