Macmillan, Sir Kenneth 1929-92
Scottish ballet-dancer and choreographer

Born in Dunfermline, Fife, he was one of the original members of the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet (1946-48). In 1953 he began to choreograph with the Royal Ballet (Somnambulism), and, after three years as director at the Berlin Opera (1966-69), returned to the Royal Ballet in 1970 as artistic director. In 1977 he became the company's principal choreographer. His works include Romeo and Juliet (1965), The Seven Deadly Sins (1973), Élite Syncopations and Manon (both 1974), Mayerling (1978), Isadora (1981) and The Judas Tree (1992). As well as creating ballets for many of the world's foremost companies, he worked on theatre, television, and musical shows.
