Magnus Maximus d.AD388
Roman emperor

He was a Roman army commander in Britain who, after being proclaimed emperor by his troops in AD383, crossed to Gaul and overthrew the emperor of the West, Gratian. Recognized as emperor by the Emperor of the East, Theodosius I, the Great, who was then preoccupied with problems nearer home, Maximus proceeded to rule over Gaul, Spain and Britain. His attempts to add Italy to his empire backfired, as Theodosius defeated him in battle and had him executed.
