Maillol, Aristide Joseph Bonaventure 1861-1944
French sculptor

Born in Banyuls-sur-mer, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and spent some years designing tapestries. The latter half of his life was devoted to sculpting female nudes, such as the Three Graces, Mediterranean, Crouching Woman (c.1901, Museum of Modern Art, New York) and The Mountain (1937), in a style of monumental simplicity and classical serenity. His torso for the monument in 1905 to Auguste Blanqui, Chained Action, is in the Tate Gallery, London.
