Maitland, Sir Richard, known as Lord Lethington 1496-1586
Scottish lawyer and poet

He studied at the University of St Andrews, became a Lord of Session in 1551, and (after losing his sight in 1561) Lord Privy Seal in 1562, becoming known for his moderation and integrity. His poems - mostly lamentations for the poor state of his country - were published in 1830 by the Maitland Club. He made a collection of early Scottish poetry, now forming two manuscript volumes, which are in the Pepysian collection at Cambridge. He also wrote a Historie of the Hous of Seytoun.
