Margaret (Rose), Princess 1930-
British princess

Born at Glamis Castle, Scotland, the younger daughter of King George VI and only sister of Queen Elizabeth II, she was the first scion of the royal house in the direct line of succession to be born in Scotland for more than three centuries. In 1955 she rejected a possible marriage to Group Captain Peter Townsend, on advice from the Church and the establishment, because his previous marriage had been dissolved. In 1960 she married Antony Armstrong-Jones, a photographer, who was created Earl of Snowdon in 1961. Their children are David, Viscount Linley (1961- ), and Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones (1964- ). The marriage was dissolved in 1978.
