Margaret of Austria 1480-1530
Duchess of Savoy and Regent of the Netherlands

The daughter of Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy, she was born in Brussels, and married first (1497) the Infante Juan of Spain, who died within a few months, then (1501) Philibert II, Duke of Savoy (d.1504). Her father appointed her Regent of the Netherlands (1507-15) and guardian of her nephew, the future Emperor Charles V. In 1519 she was again appointed regent by Charles V (until 1530), and proved herself a wise and capable stateswoman. Under her the Netherlands were heavily taxed to finance Habsburg military activity elsewhere.
