Mark, St, also called John Mark 1st century AD
New Testament evangelist

Born probably in Jerusalem, he is described as 'John whose surname was Mark' (Acts 12.12, 25), and commended in Colossians 4.10 and 2 Timothy 4.11. He helped the Apostles Barnabas and Paul during their first missionary journey, but caused a split between them over the question of his loyalty. Traditionally the author of the second Gospel, he was also described as the 'disciple and interpreter' of Peter in Rome. In medieval art, Mark is symbolized by the lion. His feast day is 25 April.
