Matthew, St 1st century AD
One of the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ
He was a tax collector before his conversion, and he is called Levi (his name may have been Matthew the Levite) in Mark 2.14 and Luke 5.27. According to tradition, he was the author of the first Gospel, was a missionary to the Hebrews, and was martyred. His feast day is 21 September (West) or 16 November (East).
