Russian composer

Born in Novogeorgievsk, near Warsaw, he began a career as a military engineer, turning to music in 1907. His teachers included Anatoli Liadov and Rimsky-Korsakov. After army service (1914-21) he became an influential Professor of Composition at the Moscow Conservatory. He composed 27 symphonies and other orchestral works, concertos for violin and cello, 13 string quartets and other chamber music, songs, nine piano sonatas and other works.
