Michael 1921-
King of Romania
The son of the future Carol II, he was born in Sinaira, and first succeeded to the throne (1927) on the death of his grandfather Ferdinand I, his father having renounced his own claims (1925). In 1930 he was supplanted by Carol, but was again made king (1940) when the Germans gained control of Romania. In 1944 he played a considerable part in the overthrow of the dictatorship of Ion Antonescu. He announced the acceptance of the Allied peace terms, and declared war on Germany. His attempts after the war to establish a broader system of government were foiled by the progressive Communization of Romania. In 1947 he was forced to abdicate and has since lived in exile, finally in Switzerland.
