Miltiades, the Younger c.550-489BC
Athenian general and politician

He became a vassal of Darius I of Persia and accompanied him on his Scythian expedition (c.514BC). He returned to Athens in 493, and was the chief strategist in the Greek victory against the Persians at Marathon (490). The following year he attacked the island of Paros, but failed and was impeached, and died in prison. He was the father of Cimon, also an Athenian hero.
