He was born near Nîmes. A soldier at 15, in the Seven Years War (1756-63) he commanded the French troops in North America in 1756, and captured the British post of Oswego, and also Fort William Henry, where the prisoners (men, women, and children) were massacred by the Native American allies. In 1758 he successfully defended Ticonderoga with a small force, won Louisburg and Fort Duquesne, and moved to defend Quebec against a British attack. In 1759 General Wolfe ascended the St Lawrence, and finally, in a battle on the Plains of Abraham, drove the French in retreat on the city. Montcalm tried to rally his force, but was mortally wounded.
