Morton, John Maddison 1811-91
English dramatist

Born in Pangbourne, Berkshire, the son of Thomas Morton, he became a prolific writer of farces (mostly from French), but is best remembered as the author of Cox and Box (1847). The rise of burlesque was his ruin and he became a 'poor brother' of the Charterhouse.
