Mountbatten, originally Battenberg, Prince Louis Alexander, 1st Marquess of Milford Haven 1854-1921
British naval commander

Born in Austria, the son of Prince Alexander of Hesse, he became a naturalized British subject and joined the Royal Navy in 1868. He served with distinction as a commodore in the Mediterranean fleet, as director of naval intelligence and senior sea commands. He was First Sea Lord at the outbreak of World War I, but was forced to resign because of anti-German prejudice. By royal command he gave up his German titles in 1917 and changed the family name from Battenberg to Mountbatten, and was created Marquess of Milford Haven. He was promoted admiral in 1919.
