Napier (of Magdala), Robert Cornelis Napier, 1st Baron 1810-90
British field marshal
Born in Colombo, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), he entered the Bengal Engineers in 1826. He served in campaigns in India, and during the Indian Mutiny (1857) he fought at the Siege of Lucknow. He received the thanks of parliament for his services in the Chinese war of 1860 and for leading the expedition in Abyssinia in 1868. In 1870 he became Commander-in-Chief in India and a member of the Indian Council; later he was Governor of Gibraltar, field marshal, and Constable of the Tower.
