Narses c.478-573
Byzantine general

He was born in Armenia, and served Justinian I in Constantinople (Istanbul). In 552 he succeeded Belisarius in Italy, where he defeated the Ostrogoths, took possession of Rome, and completely extinguished the Gothic power in Italy. Justinian appointed him prefect of Italy in 554, and he administered its affairs with vigour and ability. He was charged with greed, and on Justinian's death the Romans complained to Justin II, who deprived him of his office in 567.
