Egyptian leader

As general of an army division, he carried out a coup d'état in Cairo (1952) which banished King Farouk I and initiated the 'Egyptian Revolution'. Taking first the offices of Commander-in-Chief and Prime Minister, he abolished the monarchy in 1953 and became President of the republic. He was deposed in 1954 and succeeded by Colonel Gamal Abd al-Nasser.
