Newbery, John 1713-67
English publisher and bookseller
Born in Berkshire, a farmer's son, he settled in London around 1744 as a seller of books and patent medicines. He was the first to publish small books for children, and he was - perhaps with Oliver Goldsmith - part author of some of the best ones, notably Goody Two-Shoes. In 1758 he started the Universal Chronicle, or Weekly Gazette, in which the Idler appeared. Goldsmith's Citizen of the World appeared in the Public Ledger (1760). Since 1922 the Newbery medal has been awarded annually for the best US children's book.

A wildcard is a special character you can use to replace one or more characters in a word. There are two types of wildcard. The first is a question mark ?, which matches a single character. The second is an asterisk *, which matches zero or more characters. The two kinds of wildcard can be mixed in a single search.
