Oskar I 1799-1859
King of Sweden and Norway

Born in Paris, he was the only son and successor (1844) of Karl XIV Johan. A liberal by temperament, though increasingly conservative after 1848, he sought to conciliate nationalist feelings in Norway, encouraged social and economic reforms, developed schools, railways, banks and industry, and pursued a policy of Scandinavian unity and Swedish neutrality. He married Josephine of Leuchtenberg, the daughter of Eugčne de Beauharnais, Duke of Leuchtenberg, and his wife Augusta Amalia of Bavaria.
