Oswald, Lee Harvey 1939-63
US alleged assassin of President John F Kennedy

Born in New Orleans, he was a Marxist and former US marine who had lived for some time in the USSR (1959-62). On 23 November 1963 he was charged with the murder of President Kennedy, whom he was alleged to have shot from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository, as the President passed by in a motor cavalcade. Two days later, Oswald was shot dead by Jack Ruby (1911-67), who claimed to be avenging Jacqueline Kennedy (Jackie Kennedy Onassis). Claims were made that Oswald had links with the US secret service and with the Mafia. In 1979, the House Assassination's Committee decided that Kennedy 'was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy'.
