Holy Roman Emperor
The son of Otto I, he became emperor in 973, successfully fought the Danes and Bohemians, and subdued Bavaria (974-78), which he reduced in size by splitting it up. In 972 he married Theophano, daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Romanus II. He invaded France, was defeated by the Arabs in southern Italy, and overreached himself in attempts on the Eastern Empire.
