Otto III 980-1002
Holy Roman Emperor

The son of Otto II, he came to the throne at the age of three. His mother, Empress Theophano, ruled as Regent until her death (991); thereafter his grandmother Adelaide, widow of Otto I, ruled as Regent until his accession (996). He made first his cousin (Gregory V) and then his tutor (Sylvester II) pope. He lived most of his short life in Rome and tried to make it the capital of the empire, but was driven out by the hostility of the people (1002). The Ottonian cultural revival reached new heights under his encouragement of scholars and artists.
