Paul I 1901-64
King of Greece
The son of Constantine I, brother and successor of George II, he was born in Athens and educated at the naval academy there. He was in exile with his father during his first deposition (1917-20). In 1922 he served with the Greek navy in the campaign against the Turks, but went into exile again (1923) when his brother George was deposed and a republic was proclaimed. In 1935 he returned to Greece with his brother, as Crown Prince. At the start of World War II he served with the Greek general staff in the Albanian campaign, and was a member of the Greek government in exile in London for the rest of the war. He succeeded to the throne on the death of his brother (1947). He married (1938) his cousin, Princess Frederika, daughter of the Duke of Brunswick, whose political views aroused controversy, but his reign was seen as a symbol of Greek postwar recovery. He was succeeded by his son Constantine II.
