Born in Bordeaux, he was baptized a Christian (c.389AD) and settled in Nola in Italy, where he became known for his charity and his rigid asceticism. He was consecrated Bishop of Nola (c.409). He is remembered for his Carmina and for his epistles to Augustine of Hippo, Jerome, Sulpicius Severus, and Ausonius.
