Paullus, Lucius Aemilius d.216BC
Roman general and politician

The father of Lucius Aemilius Paullus Macedonicus, he is chiefly remembered for his disastrous generalship at the Battle of Cannae (216BC), where the Roman army, though numerically superior, was heavily defeated by Hannibal and the Carthaginians, and suffered one of its worst defeats ever. Paullus himself, consul at the time, died on the field of battle. His grandson, adopted by Scipio, was Scipio Aemilianus.
