Pedro (Peter), known as the Cruel 1334-69
King of Castile and León

He was born in Burgos, and succeeded his father, Alfonso XI, in 1350. Their attempts to assert strong monarchic government aroused resentment among the nobility, who found a leader in Pedro's illegitimate brother, Henry of Trastámara. A revolt (1354) was suppressed and Henry fled to France, but returned in 1366 with French and Aragonese support. With the help of Edward, the Black Prince, Pedro defeated his rival at Nájera (1367) but after Edward's departure from Spain, Pedro was finally routed and killed by Henry at Montiel (1369).
