Peirce, Benjamin 1809-80
US mathematician

Born in Salem, Massachusetts, he became professor at Harvard in 1833, astronomer to the American Nautical Almanac in 1849, and was superintendent of the Coast Survey (1867-74). His papers on the discovery of Neptune (1848) and on Saturn's rings (1851-55) and his Treatise on Analytic Mechanics (1857) attracted great attention. He also did important work in algebra.
