Perón, Isabelita, popular name of Maria Estela Martínez de Perón, née Cartas 1931-
Argentine politician

Maria Cartas was born in La Rioja Province and adopted the name Isabel when she began her career as a dancer. She became the third wife of the deposed President Juan Perón in 1961, and lived with him in Spain until his triumphal return to Argentina as President in 1973, when she was made Vice-President.

She took over the presidency at his death in 1974, but was ousted in a military coup in 1976 and placed under house arrest for five years. On her release in 1981 she settled in Madrid, and in 1988 she returned to Argentina.
