Philip I, the Handsome 1478-1506
King of Castile

The son of Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy, he was born at Bruges, and as Archduke of Austria and Duke of Burgundy he was married in 1496 to the Infanta of Spain, Juana, daughter of Ferdinand, the Catholic, of Aragon and Isabella of Castile. Isabella's death (1504) made Juana Queen of Castile, but Ferdinand declared himself her Regent. In 1506 Philip went to claim the throne, but died in the same year, and Juana, who suffered from depression, was confined by her father. Their children were the Holy Roman Emperors Charles V and his successor, Ferdinand I.
