She divorced her first husband in favour of her lover, Nero's playboy friend, the future Emperor Otho. She then became Nero's mistress, divorcing Otho to marry him in AD62. Her influence over Nero allegedly extended to his having his mother Agrippina, the Younger, and his former wife Octavia put to death, and ordering the philosopher Seneca to commit suicide. Poppaea Sabina shared the then fashionable interest in Judaism, and has been thought by many to have encouraged Nero in his vicious attack on the Christians in the aftermath of the Fire of Rome (64). Tradition relates that she was kicked to death by Nero while pregnant.
